Coffee ritual to plan your work week

The smell of coffee is linked with waking up and getting going. This Monday ritual uses it as a cue to plan: you choose three priorities, decide what you will say no to and block time in your calendar. It does not replace the work itself, but it helps you start the week with intention instead of in a rush.

In short: The smell of coffee is linked with waking up and getting going. You need 4 simple items and 5 steps. When: On Monday morning or Sunday afternoon, before you open your email.

When to do it

On Monday morning or Sunday afternoon, before you open your email. Also when you come back from holiday or start a new project.

What you need

  • A handful of coffee beans on a small plate
  • A small orange candle in a stable holder
  • Your planner or calendar
  • A sheet of paper and a pen

Step by step

  1. Place the candle on a non-flammable surface, away from curtains and papers, and light it. Put the plate of coffee beans beside you and breathe in their aroma.
  2. Write down everything you have to do this week, in no particular order, until your head feels empty.
  3. Circle just three tasks: the ones that would make the week worthwhile. Place a coffee bean next to each one.
  4. Also write down one thing you will say no to or delegate, and block a specific slot in your calendar for each priority.
  5. Say: “This week I move forward on what matters, at my own pace and with clarity.” Put out the candle with a snuffer and leave the three beans on your desk as a reminder.

Safety first

Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.

These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
