Evil eye ritual to protect yourself from envy

The evil eye, or nazar, is one of the best-known charms of the Mediterranean: its blue circle symbolises a protective gaze that brings back calm when we feel heavy looks or envious remarks. This ritual is not against anyone: its aim is to help you feel at peace, protect your plans by sharing them only with people who support you and stop envy, other people's or your own, from draining your energy.

In short: The evil eye, or nazar, is one of the best-known charms of the Mediterranean: its blue circle symbolises a protective gaze that brings back calm when we feel heavy looks or envious remarks. You need 4 simple items and 5 steps. When: When you start an exciting project, after receiving good news or if you notice remarks that leave you feeling uneasy.

When to do it

When you start an exciting project, after receiving good news or if you notice remarks that leave you feeling uneasy. Traditionally it is done during the waning moon, to release what weighs on you, or on a Tuesday.

What you need

  • An evil eye charm (pendant, bracelet or keyring)
  • A blue candle in a sturdy holder
  • A small bowl of water with a pinch of salt
  • Paper and a pen

Step by step

  1. Air the room for a few minutes. Place the candle on a surface that can't burn, away from curtains and papers, and light it. Put the bowl and the evil eye in front of it.
  2. Write on the paper what is draining your energy: a remark, a comparison, a feeling. Also write what you want to protect: your project, your calm, your joy.
  3. Slowly pass the evil eye over the bowl of salt water and say: "I keep my light, I let go of what isn't mine and I wish no one harm".
  4. Hold the charm in both hands and think of three people who do support you. Decide that you'll share your next plans with them first.
  5. Put the candle out with a snuffer rather than blowing it. Tear up the paper with what drains you and throw it away; keep the one with what you protect. Carry the evil eye with you or hang it by your front door.

Safety first

Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.

These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.

To finish

Pour the salt water down the sink, never on plants. If the evil eye breaks, tradition says it has done its job: thank it and replace it with a new one. If someone's remarks turn into harassment or truly hurt you, talk to someone you trust or seek professional help; in an emergency, call the emergency services. Never leave the candle unattended or within reach of children or pets. Pair it with the salt ritual to protect your home or the horseshoe ritual.
