Calendar ritual to close the month and welcome the next
Turning the calendar page is a small gesture we usually make without thinking, yet it marks a full cycle: about four weeks of effort, encounters and lessons. This ritual turns it into a mindful moment. You look back on the month with gratitude, decide what you do not want to carry into the next one and choose a word to guide you over the coming weeks. It is simple, takes a quarter of an hour and works for any month of the year.

When to do it
On the last evening of the month or the first day of the next. Even better if it falls on the new moon, the phase of beginnings.
What you need
- The page of the month that is ending (from a paper calendar or printed)
- A blank sheet for the new month
- A small white or gold candle in a stable holder
- A pen
- A candle snuffer or a teaspoon
- An envelope or box to keep the months
Step by step
- Place the candle in its holder on a stable, non-flammable surface, away from curtains and the sheets of paper, and light it.
- Look over the days of the month that is ending. On the back of its page, write three things you are grateful for this month and one thing you choose to leave behind.
- Read what you wrote softly, fold the page and say: “Thank you, passing month; I keep what I have learned.”
- On the blank sheet, write a single word for the month ahead (for example “calm”, “order” or “courage”) and, below it, a small, concrete plan that reflects it.
- Put out the candle with the snuffer or the teaspoon, without blowing. Keep the folded page in the months envelope and put the new word where you will see it every day.
Safety first
Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.
These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
To finish
Do not burn the pages: keep them in the envelope and, at the end of the year, read them all together to see how far you have come; then you can recycle them. Never leave the candle burning unattended or within reach of children or pets. To close each day calmly as well, pair it with the white candle ritual.
