Birthday ritual to begin your new personal year
Your birthday is your own new year: the day the sun returns to the same point in the sky where it was when you were born. Many cultures celebrate it with a candle, a sweet treat and a wish, because it is the perfect moment to close one chapter and open another. This ritual turns that tradition into a small meeting with yourself: giving thanks for what you've lived, choosing a word to guide you and spreading your intentions across the four seasons.
In short: Your birthday is your own new year: the day the sun returns to the same point in the sky where it was when you were born. You need 5 simple items and 5 steps. When: On your birthday or the days around it, during a quiet moment before or after celebrating with your loved ones.
When to do it
On your birthday or the days around it, during a quiet moment before or after celebrating with your loved ones. You can also do it with someone dear to you on their birthday.
What you need
- A cupcake, a slice of sponge cake or a piece of fruit
- A small birthday candle in a holder or on a non-flammable plate
- A sheet of paper and a pen
- A candle snuffer or a teaspoon
- A photo of you from another birthday (optional)
Step by step
- Place the cupcake or fruit on a plate on a stable, clear table and put the candle in a holder beside it. If you have a photo from another birthday, set it nearby.
- On the sheet, write three things you're glad you lived through in the past year and one thing you learned. Read them softly and thank yourself for getting this far.
- Choose a word you'd like to guide your new year, such as "calm", "courage" or "play", and write it large in the middle of the sheet.
- Divide the rest of the sheet into four parts, one per season, and write a small, concrete intention in each: a place to visit, something to learn or a habit to start.
- Light the candle, gaze at it for a moment while thinking of your word and make your wish in silence. Then put it out with the snuffer, without blowing, and enjoy the treat or fruit slowly.
Safety first
Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.
These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
To finish
Keep the sheet in a dated envelope and open it on your next birthday to see how many intentions have come true. Place the candle in a stable holder, away from curtains, paper and hair, and never leave it burning unattended or within reach of children or pets. If you share the treat, keep possible allergies or intolerances in mind (gluten, egg, milk or nuts). To close each month too, pair it with the calendar ritual; to make a wish under the sky, with the first star ritual.
