Pomegranate ritual to sow hope and joy in love
The pomegranate is one of the fruits most closely linked to love in Mediterranean tradition: its hundreds of seeds, held together under one skin, symbolise an abundance of affection and bonds that grow with care. In autumn, when it is at its best, this ritual invites you to open one slowly, choose a few seeds as symbols of your wishes and share the rest. It works whether you are in a relationship or opening yourself to new love, because it focuses on what you can offer and nurture, never on changing anyone else's will.
In short: The pomegranate is one of the fruits most closely linked to love in Mediterranean tradition: its hundreds of seeds, held together under one skin, symbolise an abundance of affection and bonds that grow with care. You need 5 simple items and 5 steps. When: During the waxing moon, on a Friday, the day linked to Venus.
When to do it
During the waxing moon, on a Friday, the day linked to Venus. It is ideal between October and December, pomegranate season, and also on an anniversary or at the start of a relationship.
What you need
- A ripe pomegranate
- A knife and a chopping board
- A bowl and a small white plate
- A small red candle in a stable holder
- Paper, a pen and a candle snuffer or a teaspoon
Step by step
- Place the candle in its holder on a heat-proof surface, away from curtains and papers, and light it. Never leave it unattended.
- Score a shallow cut around the pomegranate, break it open with your hands over the bowl and put the knife away straight after. The juice stains, so wear an apron if you like.
- On the paper, write three wishes for your love life, phrased positively and centred on you, for example: “I give and receive tenderness” or “I open myself to a love that brings me peace.”
- Set aside three seeds for each wish and place them on the small plate in front of the candle. Read each wish aloud and say: “I sow hope and let love grow at its own pace.”
- Eat the seeds on the plate slowly, savouring them, or share them with your partner. Put the candle out with the snuffer rather than blowing it out, fold the paper and keep it in your journal or by your bed.
Safety first
Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.
These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
To finish
Use the rest of the pomegranate in a salad or dessert to share: offering something sweet is also a gesture of love. Air the room when you finish and keep the seeds out of reach of pets. Reread your wishes at the next full moon and note the small steps you have taken. To nurture love as a couple, pair it with the apple ritual.
