Lentil ritual for abundance in your home
In Italy, Brazil and many Spanish homes, lentils are linked to abundance: their small round seeds look like coins and swell as they cook. This simple ritual uses them for two things: giving thanks for what is already on your table and putting your finances in order with a small plan. At the end, the lentils are not thrown away: they are cooked and shared.
In short: In Italy, Brazil and many Spanish homes, lentils are linked to abundance: their small round seeds look like coins and swell as they cook. You need 5 simple items and 5 steps. When: During a waxing moon, on a Thursday or at the start of the month.
When to do it
During a waxing moon, on a Thursday or at the start of the month. It is a tradition for the last days of the year, but it works whenever you want a fresh start with your money.
What you need
- A handful of dried lentils in a bowl
- A clean coin
- A small gold or yellow candle in a stable holder
- Paper and a pen
- A small jar or fabric pouch
Step by step
- Place the candle on a heat-proof surface, away from curtains and paper, and light it. Set the bowl of lentils in front of it with the coin in the centre.
- Take a handful of lentils and, as you let them fall slowly into the bowl, name aloud three things you already have and are grateful for: a roof, a job, someone who supports you.
- Write down your income and fixed expenses for the month and choose one small expense you can cut or an amount you will set aside.
- Place the coin on the paper and say: "I am grateful for what I have and I look after it so it can grow."
- Put a spoonful of lentils and the coin in the jar or pouch and keep it in the pantry or kitchen. Put the candle out with a snuffer.
Safety first
Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.
These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
To finish
Cook the rest of the lentils that week and, if you can, share them with someone: abundance that is shared multiplies. Refresh the jar every month. To reflect on your finances, try the free career and money spread.
