Horseshoe ritual to bring good luck into your home

The horseshoe is one of Europe’s oldest good-luck charms: it was forged from iron, a metal seen as protective, and nailed above the doors of houses and stables. The most widespread tradition says it should hang with its ends pointing up, like a bowl that catches and keeps good luck. This ritual guides you in preparing your own horseshoe with your wishes for the home, and turns the gesture of touching it on your way out into a daily reminder that you are open to good things.

When to do it

During the waxing moon or at the new moon, on a Thursday, the day of Jupiter, linked to fortune. Also when you move house, at the start of the year or when beginning a new chapter at home.

What you need

  • A real used horseshoe or a decorative one made of metal or wood
  • A soft brush and a dry cloth
  • A red or gold ribbon
  • A strong hook or a nail suitable for its weight
  • A small piece of paper and a pen

Step by step

  1. Brush the horseshoe to remove dust or loose rust and dry it well with the cloth. If it is a used one, wash your hands afterwards.
  2. On the paper, write three good-luck wishes for your home in the present tense, for example: “Good news, work and joy come into this home.”
  3. Fold the paper, tie it to the horseshoe with the ribbon and hold it with both hands while saying: “May good luck come into this home and stay.”
  4. Hang it with the ends pointing up above the front door, on the inside, using a hook that can safely hold its weight and in a spot where it cannot fall on anyone.
  5. Whenever you leave home for something important, touch the horseshoe and silently repeat one of your wishes.

Safety first

These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.

To finish

Once a year, take it down, clean it and renew the paper with fresh wishes. Real horseshoes are heavy: check that the hook is secure and hang it out of reach of small children. Luck also needs a little help: say yes to the opportunities that come your way. To fill your home with warmth, pair it with the pine cone ritual.
