Memory box ritual to renew your love

Over time, routine can bury the moments that brought you together: the first trip, a cinema ticket, a note written in a hurry. This couple's ritual brings them back into the light. You gather small keepsakes in a box, look through them by candlelight and add something new: a plan you have not lived yet. It does not try to change anyone; it is a lovely way to care for what you already share and to look ahead together.

In short: Over time, routine can bury the moments that brought you together: the first trip, a cinema ticket, a note written in a hurry. You need 5 simple items and 5 steps. When: On a Friday evening, during a waxing or full moon, or close to an anniversary.

When to do it

On a Friday evening, during a waxing or full moon, or close to an anniversary. Also whenever you feel routine has pulled you a little apart and you want to reconnect without rushing.

What you need

  • A pretty box (wooden, cardboard or a covered shoebox)
  • Small keepsakes from your relationship: photos, tickets, notes, a dried flower
  • A small red or pink candle in a stable holder
  • Two cards and a pen
  • A candle snuffer or a teaspoon

Step by step

  1. Place the candle in its holder on a heat-proof surface, away from curtains and papers, and light it. Keep the box and any paper keepsakes at a safe distance from the flame.
  2. Sit down together and go through the keepsakes one by one. Each of you shares what you felt in that moment and what you liked about the other person back then.
  3. On the cards, each of you writes one thing you value about your partner today and one plan you would love to share this year.
  4. Read the cards aloud, put them in the box with the keepsakes and say: “We cherish what we have lived and we choose what comes next.”
  5. Put out the candle with the snuffer, close the box and keep it somewhere special at home. Before you finish, set a date for the first plan.

Safety first

Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.

These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.

To finish

Open the box every few months, add a new keepsake and follow through on the plans you wrote. If you do the ritual on your own, gather memories of moments when you felt loved and write down what you wish for in your next relationship. To sweeten life together, pair it with the honey ritual.
