Shared chocolate ritual to rekindle closeness

Over time, routine can hide the small gestures that make a relationship special. Chocolate has long been linked to pleasure and celebration, and sharing it slowly is a simple way to really look at each other again. This couples ritual invites you to pause for ten minutes, enjoy something sweet and say out loud what you value in each other. It is always done by mutual agreement: a shared gift, not a way to change anyone.

In short: Over time, routine can hide the small gestures that make a relationship special. You need 4 simple items and 5 steps. When: On a Friday or Sunday afternoon, when you have some unhurried time.

When to do it

On a Friday or Sunday afternoon, when you have some unhurried time. Also after a very busy period or before an anniversary.

What you need

  • Two squares of chocolate you both like (with an alternative if anyone has allergies or intolerances)
  • A pretty small plate
  • A stick of gentle incense, such as jasmine or sandalwood, in a stable holder (optional)
  • Two slips of paper and two pens

Step by step

  1. If you use incense, place it in a stable holder on a heat-proof surface away from curtains, air the room and light it. If the smoke bothers either of you, skip it.
  2. Leave your phones in another room. Put the chocolate on the plate, sit facing each other and take three slow breaths together.
  3. Each of you writes three specific things you value in the other: a gesture, a quality, a recent memory.
  4. Take turns: eat a square, let it melt slowly and read your three sentences. The person listening only answers "thank you".
  5. Say together: "We choose to care for each other with sweetness and attention." Put the incense out completely in its holder, never leaving it burning unattended, and keep the slips somewhere special.

Safety first

These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.

To finish

During the week, repeat one of those sentences out loud for no particular reason. If you like, do the free love spread together to talk about what lies ahead.
