Moon water ritual to charge your intentions

Moon water is one of the best-known rituals in folk tradition: a container of water is left in the light of the full moon so that, symbolically, it is charged with its energy. It is then used to water plants, lovingly cleanse objects or as a reminder of what you wish for. This ritual invites you to prepare it with a clear intention and turn it into a gesture of care throughout the lunar month.

In short: Moon water is one of the best-known rituals in folk tradition: a container of water is left in the light of the full moon so that, symbolically, it is charged with its energy. You need 5 simple items and 5 steps. When: On the night of the full moon or the night before, ideally with a clear sky.

When to do it

On the night of the full moon or the night before, ideally with a clear sky. In November 2026 the full moon falls on the 24th. If it is cloudy, tradition says the water charges all the same.

What you need

  • A clean glass jar with a lid
  • Tap water
  • A white candle in a stable holder
  • Paper and a pen
  • A label for the jar

Step by step

  1. As night falls, fill the jar with water and close it. Light the candle on a surface that cannot burn, away from curtains and papers.
  2. Write on the paper three intentions for this lunar cycle, in the present tense and in positive terms: “I look after my calm”, “I finish what I start”, “I open myself to the new”.
  3. Hold the jar in both hands, read your intentions softly and place it on an indoor windowsill where the moonlight reaches it.
  4. Put out the candle with a snuffer, without blowing. Leave the jar all night and collect it in the morning, before the strong sun hits it.
  5. Write the date and one word from your intentions on the label. Use the water during the month to water your plants or cleanse your stones and your ritual table.

Safety first

Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.

These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.

To finish

Moon water is not for drinking: use it only for watering or cleansing and replace it every month. Keep the jar indoors, somewhere stable where it cannot fall, and do not leave it on balconies within reach of children or pets. Never leave the candle burning unattended. To welcome the new stage, pair it with the first star ritual or the open window ritual.
