Compliment jar ritual to brighten a friend’s day
We often assume our friends know what we think of them, yet we hardly ever say it. One kind sentence read on a bad day can change everything. This ritual turns appreciation into something you can hold: a jar of little notes with sincere compliments, so your friend can open one whenever they need it. It asks for nothing in return: it is a gift of recognition and affection.
In short: We often assume our friends know what we think of them, yet we hardly ever say it. You need 5 simple items and 5 steps. When: At the full moon, the phase of fullness, or a week before their birthday or a difficult date for them.

When to do it
At the full moon, the phase of fullness, or a week before their birthday or a difficult date for them. Set aside a quiet afternoon.
What you need
- A clean jar with a lid (plastic if small children are around)
- Coloured paper cut into strips of about 2 × 10 cm
- A pen with nice ink
- A piece of ribbon or string
- A label for the lid
Step by step
- Think of this friend and recall specific moments: when they helped you, what made you laugh, what you admire about the way they are.
- Write one compliment on each strip, starting with “I love that…”, “I admire how…” or “Thank you for that time when…”. Keep them specific and true; twelve to fifteen is plenty.
- Roll up each strip and drop it into the jar as you say: “May every word remind you how much you are worth.”
- Close the jar, tie the ribbon around the lid and write on the label: “Open one note whenever you need it.”
- Give it in person or leave it at their door with a short note. There is no need to explain anything else.
Safety first
These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
To finish
Keep one blank strip for yourself and, when you remember something new you admire, write it down and add it next time you meet. If the jar is glass, wrap it well so it does not break on the way. To keep the bond alive, pair it with the travelling notebook ritual.
