Bamboo ritual to adapt to changes at work

Bamboo bends in the wind but doesn't break, which is why in Asia it's a symbol of resilience and flexibility. When a change you didn't choose arrives at work, such as a reorganisation, a new tool or a new manager, it's normal to feel uneasy. This ritual helps you be like bamboo: keep your roots steady, let go of what doesn't depend on you and adapt step by step.

In short: Bamboo bends in the wind but doesn't break, which is why in Asia it's a symbol of resilience and flexibility. You need 4 simple items and 5 steps. When: On days when a change at work is announced, or just before you start a new role, team or project.

When to do it

On days when a change at work is announced, or just before you start a new role, team or project. A Monday morning or the waxing moon are good times to begin.

What you need

  • A lucky bamboo in a vase of water
  • A sheet of paper and a pen
  • A coloured marker
  • A few quiet minutes before your working day

Step by step

  1. Place the bamboo where you can see it, on your desk or at home. Look at it and breathe deeply three times, imagining your feet are roots that stay firm.
  2. Divide the sheet into two columns: "What depends on me" and "What doesn't depend on me". Write everything that worries you about the change in each one.
  3. Cross out the column of what doesn't depend on you with the marker and say: "I let this pass, like the wind through the canes".
  4. In the other column, circle just one thing and turn it into a flexible step for this week: asking for an explanation, learning the new tool or introducing yourself to the team.
  5. Fold the sheet and leave it next to the bamboo. Each time you change the water, check how your step is going and choose the next one.

Safety first

These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.

To finish

Change the bamboo's water once a week and keep it out of direct sunlight. Note that lucky bamboo (dracaena) is toxic to cats and dogs, so keep it out of their reach. If the change leaves you feeling you need to turn the page, pair it with the lemon ritual.
