Shared blanket ritual for a calm evening as a couple
In northern Europe the long autumn evenings are spent under a blanket, with soft light and no rush. Sharing that shelter is a simple way of saying "I'm here with you". This ritual turns an ordinary night into time just for the two of you: you switch off the screens, snuggle under the same blanket and tell each other the good things of the week. There is nothing to solve; it is enough to listen to each other calmly.
In short: In northern Europe the long autumn evenings are spent under a blanket, with soft light and no rush. You need 5 simple items and 5 steps. When: On a cold autumn or winter night, ideally during a waxing moon, the phase when things grow.
When to do it
On a cold autumn or winter night, ideally during a waxing moon, the phase when things grow. Choose an evening with no early commitments the next day, and only do it if you both feel like it.
What you need
- A large, soft blanket you both like
- A small cream or orange candle in a sturdy holder
- Two mugs of your favourite hot drink
- A card and a pen
- A candle snuffer or a teaspoon
Step by step
- Place the candle in its holder on a stable, non-flammable table, away from curtains, cushions and the blanket itself, and light it. Silence your phones and leave them in another room.
- Sit together on the sofa, pull the blanket over you both and sip your drinks quietly for a couple of minutes, noticing the shared warmth.
- Take turns to tell three lovely moments from your week, however small: a laugh, a message, a meal. The other person just listens and says thank you.
- Then each of you names one loving gesture you would enjoy receiving this week: a walk, a breakfast, a hug when you get home. Write both gestures on the card.
- Fold the blanket together, place the card on top and put out the candle with the snuffer or teaspoon, without blowing, saying: "Our shelter is being together".
Safety first
Never leave a lit candle unattended. Place it in a stable, heat-resistant holder away from curtains, paper, children and pets, and put it out with a snuffer.
These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
To finish
Keep the card inside the folded blanket and, once you have both made your gestures, repeat the ritual with new ones. Never leave the candle burning unattended or within reach of children or pets, and always keep fabrics and blankets away from the flame. If you enjoy this time together, pair it with the shared chocolate ritual.
