Lemon ritual for a fresh start at work

We all have days at work that go wrong: a mistake, harsh feedback, a meeting that did not go as planned. Lemon, with its clean scent and sharp taste, is used in many traditions to refresh and begin again. This ritual helps you close that day without carrying it with you: you separate what you can learn from what is no longer in your hands, and you prepare a first step for tomorrow.

In short: We all have days at work that go wrong: a mistake, harsh feedback, a meeting that did not go as planned. You need 5 simple items and 5 steps. When: At the end of a tough working day, the night before going back after a problem, or on a Sunday afternoon if the week was difficult.

When to do it

At the end of a tough working day, the night before going back after a problem, or on a Sunday afternoon if the week was difficult. It suits the waning moon, the phase of letting go.

What you need

  • A fresh lemon
  • A knife and a chopping board
  • A glass of fresh water
  • Paper and a pen
  • A small bowl

Step by step

  1. Wash the lemon and carefully cut it in half on the board; put the knife away as soon as you are done. Squeeze a few drops into the glass of water and leave one half in the bowl.
  2. Smell the lemon and take three deep breaths. On the top half of the paper, write in a few lines, without judging yourself, what happened at work today.
  3. Draw a line and write two things below it: what you can learn from what happened and what is no longer up to you.
  4. Cut or tear off the top part of the paper and throw it away as you say: “I let this day go; I keep what I have learned.”
  5. Sip the lemon water slowly and, on the part you keep, write one concrete first step for tomorrow: asking for clarification, fixing a detail or starting with the simplest task.

Safety first

These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.

To finish

The next day, take that first step as soon as you start work. Use the other half of the lemon in the kitchen so nothing goes to waste. If the problem keeps coming back, talk to someone you trust at work. To plan your week calmly, pair it with the Monday coffee ritual.
