⧉ Friendship
Old photo ritual to reconnect with a long-lost friend
Sometimes a friendship does not break, it simply fades: moving cities, new jobs, children, busy years… and one day you realise you have not heard from that person in ages. An old photo has the power to take us straight back to shared moments. This ritual helps you turn nostalgia into a brave gesture: reaching out first, without expectations and with an open heart.
In short: Sometimes a friendship does not break, it simply fades: moving cities, new jobs, children, busy years… You need 4 simple items and 5 steps. When: When a photo, a song or a place reminds you of that friendship and you feel like hearing from them.
When to do it
When a photo, a song or a place reminds you of that friendship and you feel like hearing from them. The waxing moon is the traditional phase for reviving what you want to grow again.
What you need
- An old photo of the two of you or of the group (printed or on your phone)
- A piece of paper and a pen
- A cup of tea or coffee
- A quiet twenty minutes
Step by step
- Make your drink, look at the photo calmly and let the memories come: where you were, what made you laugh, what brought you together.
- Write down three lovely memories of that friendship and one quality of theirs you still admire.
- Draft a short, warm message with no reproach for the time that has passed, for example: “I came across this photo and thought of you; I’d love to know how you are.”
- Read the message aloud, take a deep breath and send it through whatever channel you usually reach each other: a text, an email or a letter.
- Keep the paper with the memories next to the photo. Whether they reply soon, later or not at all, quietly give thanks for what that friendship gave you.
Safety first
These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
To finish
The other person may take a while to reply or may have a very different life now, and that is fine too: your gesture is already a gift. If you share the photo, make sure the people in it do not mind, and do not insist if there is no answer. To keep caring for your friendships, pair it with the postcard ritual or the olive ritual.
