Threshold ritual to leave work at the office
Switching off does not start on the sofa: it starts at the door. The threshold—of the office, the building or the car—is a symbolic line between work mode and life mode. This ritual offers a brief exit gesture to leave tasks and tension behind and arrive more present at home.
In short: Switching off does not start on the sofa: it starts at the door. You need 3 simple items and 5 steps. When: At the end of the day, before opening personal chats or the sofa.
When to do it
At the end of the day, before opening personal chats or the sofa. The waning moon is the traditional phase for releasing what no longer belongs.
What you need
- The door or threshold of your exit (office, lobby, garage)
- A small paper and pen (optional)
- Your keys or an object you use when leaving
Step by step
- One minute before leaving, note (on paper or mentally) tomorrow’s most urgent task and leave it for then.
- Mute or switch off work notifications if you can. Take only what you need.
- At the threshold, touch the frame or your keys, exhale slowly and say: “I leave work here until tomorrow.”
- On the way home, do not check work email. If a work thought arises, note it for tomorrow and return to the journey.
- When you arrive, change clothes or wash your hands as a closing gesture. Celebrate with water or tea that you are in home mode.
Safety first
These rituals are symbolic. Do not ingest herbs or oils, ventilate the room when burning incense or herbs, and never perform a ritual to harm or control anyone.
To finish
Leaving work at the threshold is not lack of care: it is mental hygiene so you can show up better tomorrow. If you are expected to be endlessly available, speak with your manager or worker representation. To keep protecting your pace, combine it with the slippers ritual or the hourglass ritual.
